Devastating earthquakes are unlikely in Azerbaijan, Gurban Yetirmishli, director of the Republican Seismological Survey Center at the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, told APA on Tuesday.
"The earthquakes that hit Azerbaijan’s Ismayilli district on Dec. 13 were not very strong. However, they did not pass unnoticed,” he said.
The chief seismologist noted that tremors of this type are typical of Ismayilli.
“A process that’s typical of that zone is taking place right now. Shamakhi-Ismayilli is a lot more active compared to other seismic zones,” he added.
Azerbaijan’s Ismayilli district was hit Tuesday by two earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.4 and 4.5. Fortunately, no casualties and damages were recorded after the quakes.
