• Trump thanks Navy commanding officers who led Syria airstrikes

President Donald Trump on Sunday called the Navy commanding officers charged with conducting the missile strikes in Syria last week to thank them and their crew for their professionalism and quick response, Apa reported citing online magazine Politico.

The U.S. launched 59 Tomahawk missiles on April 6 – targeting the Syrian regime’s Shayrat air base near Homs – in retaliation for a deadly chemical weapons attack that the U.S. believes was carried out by Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government. The chemical attack killed dozens, including children.

İn the U.S. strike on Syria, missiles were launched from two U.S. destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean Sea: the USS Porter and the USS Ross.

On Sunday, Trump called and thanked the commanders of the Porter and Ross: Andria Slough and Russell Caldwell, respectively.

He later thanked the Navy in a tweet Sunday evening, linking to the Navy’s press release on the phone calls.

The calls followed Trump’s tweet early Saturday where he praised those who carried out the missile strikes. “Congratulations to our great military men and women for representing the United States, and the world, so well in the Syria attack.”
